26: The Poets (Al-Shuara)

Revealed at Makkah

The title of this chapter is taken from a reference to poets in v. 224, where the allegation is refuted that the Quran is the work of a poet. It opens by consoling the Holy Prophet that he need not be anxious because of the rejection of his message by the people or despair of their reform. Then the histories of several prophets are narrated, presenting the fate of their opponents as a warning to the Holy Prophet’s opponents, and finally the subject reverts to their objections against him. This chapter, and the two following it, belong to the middle period at Makkah.

Section 1 (Verses 26:1–26:9): The Prophet is Consoled

26:1
طٰسٓمّٓ ﴿۱﴾
Benignant, Hearing, Knowing God.
This verse consists of the letters ṭā, sīn and mīm, which may stand for the names of God: Laṭīf, meaning Benignant, Samī‘, meaning Hearing, and ‘Alīm, meaning Knowing. I may, however, suggest another interpretation. These chapters speak in particular of the calling of Moses at Mount Sinai, so ṭā sīn may stand for Ṭūr Sīna’, or Mount Sinai, and mīm may stand for Moses; attention is thus called in these letters to the revelation granted to Moses at Mount Sinai, which bears testimony to the truth of the Prophet. This is corroborated by the plain statement made in the last chapter of this group, that the disbelievers called the revelations of Moses and Muhammad two enchantments backing up each other (28:48).
26:2
تِلۡکَ اٰیٰتُ الۡکِتٰبِ الۡمُبِیۡنِ ﴿۲﴾
These are the verses of the Book that makes manifest.
The Quran makes manifest all that is needed for a right development of the human faculties, and it also makes manifest the whole truth.
26:3
لَعَلَّکَ بَاخِعٌ نَّفۡسَکَ اَلَّا یَکُوۡنُوۡا مُؤۡمِنِیۡنَ ﴿۳﴾
Perhaps you will kill yourself with grief because they do not believe.
The Prophet was informed by Divine revelation of the doom of an evil generation, but instead of cursing it, he exerted himself heroically to save his people by bringing about a mighty transformation among them, a transformation for which he was so anxious that he is described here as almost killing himself with grief.
26:4
اِنۡ نَّشَاۡ نُنَزِّلۡ عَلَیۡہِمۡ مِّنَ السَّمَآءِ اٰیَۃً فَظَلَّتۡ اَعۡنَاقُہُمۡ لَہَا خٰضِعِیۡنَ ﴿۴﴾
If We please, We could send down on them a sign from heaven, so that their necks would bend before it.
Such a sign was sent in the battle of Badr and again in the conquest of Makkah. In the former place their chiefs were laid low, and in the latter they accepted submission.
26:5
وَ مَا یَاۡتِیۡہِمۡ مِّنۡ ذِکۡرٍ مِّنَ الرَّحۡمٰنِ مُحۡدَثٍ اِلَّا کَانُوۡا عَنۡہُ مُعۡرِضِیۡنَ ﴿۵﴾
And no new Reminder from the Beneficent comes to them but they turn away from it.
26:6
فَقَدۡ کَذَّبُوۡا فَسَیَاۡتِیۡہِمۡ اَنۡۢبٰٓؤُا مَا کَانُوۡا بِہٖ یَسۡتَہۡزِءُوۡنَ ﴿۶﴾
They indeed reject, so the news will soon come to them of that at which they mock.
It was the prophecies of their own defeat and of the predominance of Islam at which they mocked.
26:7
اَوَ لَمۡ یَرَوۡا اِلَی الۡاَرۡضِ کَمۡ اَنۡۢبَتۡنَا فِیۡہَا مِنۡ کُلِّ زَوۡجٍ کَرِیۡمٍ ﴿۷﴾
Do they not see the earth, how many of every noble kind We cause to grow in it?
26:8
اِنَّ فِیۡ ذٰلِکَ لَاٰیَۃً ؕوَ مَا کَانَ اَکۡثَرُ ہُمۡ مُّؤۡمِنِیۡنَ ﴿۸﴾
Surely in this is a sign, yet most of them do not believe.
26:9
وَ اِنَّ رَبَّکَ لَہُوَ الۡعَزِیۡزُ الرَّحِیۡمُ ﴿٪۹﴾
And surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful.
Seven prophets in all are spoken of in this chapter, and it is related how the enemies of every one of them were exterminated in the final triumph of the Truth. Yet to give an indication of the fate of the Prophet Muhammad’s opponents each prophet’s mention is ended with the two attributes of the Divine Being mentioned here, the Mighty, the Merciful, the first of these indicating that Truth will, even now, be made to overcome all opposition and the second that the dealing with the opponents of the Prophet would be a merciful dealing. The Prophet’s opponents were defeated indeed but they were not destroyed and a reformed people rose again to power.

Section 2 (Verses 26:10–26:33): Moses is Called and Sent to Pharaoh

26:10
وَ اِذۡ نَادٰی رَبُّکَ مُوۡسٰۤی اَنِ ائۡتِ الۡقَوۡمَ الظّٰلِمِیۡنَ ﴿ۙ۱۰﴾
And when your Lord called Moses, saying: Go to the wrongdoing people —
26:11
قَوۡمَ فِرۡعَوۡنَ ؕ اَلَا یَتَّقُوۡنَ ﴿۱۱﴾
the people of Pharaoh. Will they not guard against evil?
26:12
قَالَ رَبِّ اِنِّیۡۤ اَخَافُ اَنۡ یُّکَذِّبُوۡنِ ﴿ؕ۱۲﴾
He said: My Lord, I fear that they will reject me.
26:13
وَ یَضِیۡقُ صَدۡرِیۡ وَ لَا یَنۡطَلِقُ لِسَانِیۡ فَاَرۡسِلۡ اِلٰی ہٰرُوۡنَ ﴿۱۳﴾
And my heart is anxious, and my tongue is not eloquent, so send for Aaron (too).
26:14
وَ لَہُمۡ عَلَیَّ ذَنۡۢبٌ فَاَخَافُ اَنۡ یَّقۡتُلُوۡنِ ﴿ۚ۱۴﴾
And they have a crime against me, so I fear that they will kill me.
The reference is to the killing of the Egyptian, as mentioned in 28:15. It is stated here that the people of Pharaoh charged Moses with a crime, not that he was actually guilty. See v. 20 and 28:15.
26:15
قَالَ کَلَّا ۚ فَاذۡہَبَا بِاٰیٰتِنَاۤ اِنَّا مَعَکُمۡ مُّسۡتَمِعُوۡنَ ﴿۱۵﴾
He said: By no means; so go both of you with Our signs; surely We are with you, Hearing.
26:16
فَاۡتِیَا فِرۡعَوۡنَ فَقُوۡلَاۤ اِنَّا رَسُوۡلُ رَبِّ الۡعٰلَمِیۡنَ ﴿ۙ۱۶﴾
Then come to Pharaoh, and say: We are bearers of a message of the Lord of the worlds:
26:17
اَنۡ اَرۡسِلۡ مَعَنَا بَنِیۡۤ اِسۡرَآءِیۡلَ ﴿ؕ۱۷﴾
Send with us the Children of Israel.
26:18
قَالَ اَلَمۡ نُرَبِّکَ فِیۡنَا وَلِیۡدًا وَّ لَبِثۡتَ فِیۡنَا مِنۡ عُمُرِکَ سِنِیۡنَ ﴿ۙ۱۸﴾
(Pharaoh) said: Did we not bring you up as a child among us, and you stayed (many) years of your life among us?
26:19
وَ فَعَلۡتَ فَعۡلَتَکَ الَّتِیۡ فَعَلۡتَ وَ اَنۡتَ مِنَ الۡکٰفِرِیۡنَ ﴿۱۹﴾
And you did (that) deed of yours which you did and you are ungrateful.
26:20
قَالَ فَعَلۡتُہَاۤ اِذًا وَّ اَنَا مِنَ الضَّآلِّیۡنَ ﴿ؕ۲۰﴾
He said: I did it then when I was in error.
The circumstances in which Moses’ act of striking an Egyptian with his fist led to the death of the Egyptian are related in 28:15. There was no intention to kill the man, nor did Moses use any weapon with which death could be caused. The words “I was in error” (ḍāll) indicate one perplexed, being unable to know what was incumbent on him. He used his fist against the oppressor, and death was simply accidental.
26:21
فَفَرَرۡتُ مِنۡکُمۡ لَمَّا خِفۡتُکُمۡ فَوَہَبَ لِیۡ رَبِّیۡ حُکۡمًا وَّ جَعَلَنِیۡ مِنَ الۡمُرۡسَلِیۡنَ ﴿۲۱﴾
So I fled from you when I feared you, then my Lord granted me judgment and made me a messenger.
26:22
وَ تِلۡکَ نِعۡمَۃٌ تَمُنُّہَا عَلَیَّ اَنۡ عَبَّدۡتَّ بَنِیۡۤ اِسۡرَآءِیۡلَ ﴿ؕ۲۲﴾
And is it a favour, of which you remind me, that you have enslaved the Children of Israel?
The Israelites were employed only in menial work by Pharaoh and the Egyptians; it is this subjection to hardship which is here called enslavement.
26:23
قَالَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ وَ مَا رَبُّ الۡعٰلَمِیۡنَ ﴿ؕ۲۳﴾
Pharaoh said: And what is the Lord of the worlds?
26:24
قَالَ رَبُّ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَ الۡاَرۡضِ وَ مَا بَیۡنَہُمَا ؕ اِنۡ کُنۡتُمۡ مُّوۡقِنِیۡنَ ﴿۲۴﴾
He said: The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if you would be sure.
26:25
قَالَ لِمَنۡ حَوۡلَہٗۤ اَلَا تَسۡتَمِعُوۡنَ ﴿۲۵﴾
(Pharaoh) said to those around him: Do you not hear?
26:26
قَالَ رَبُّکُمۡ وَ رَبُّ اٰبَآئِکُمُ الۡاَوَّلِیۡنَ ﴿۲۶﴾
He said: Your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of old.
26:27
قَالَ اِنَّ رَسُوۡلَکُمُ الَّذِیۡۤ اُرۡسِلَ اِلَیۡکُمۡ لَمَجۡنُوۡنٌ ﴿۲۷﴾
(Pharaoh) said: Surely your messenger, who is sent to you, is mad.
26:28
قَالَ رَبُّ الۡمَشۡرِقِ وَ الۡمَغۡرِبِ وَ مَا بَیۡنَہُمَا ؕ اِنۡ کُنۡتُمۡ تَعۡقِلُوۡنَ ﴿۲۸﴾
He said: The Lord of the East and the West and all that is between them, if you have any sense.
26:29
قَالَ لَئِنِ اتَّخَذۡتَ اِلٰـہًا غَیۡرِیۡ لَاَجۡعَلَنَّکَ مِنَ الۡمَسۡجُوۡنِیۡنَ ﴿۲۹﴾
(Pharaoh) said: If you take a god besides me, I will certainly put you in prison.
The gods of the Egyptians were innumerable. There were abstract gods, cosmic gods, human gods and animal gods. Pharaoh’s claim to divinity among a people who were willing to deify anything has, therefore, nothing strange about it.
26:30
قَالَ اَوَ لَوۡ جِئۡتُکَ بِشَیۡءٍ مُّبِیۡنٍ ﴿ۚ۳۰﴾
He said: Even if I show you something plain?
26:31
قَالَ فَاۡتِ بِہٖۤ اِنۡ کُنۡتَ مِنَ الصّٰدِقِیۡنَ ﴿۳۱﴾
(Pharaoh) said: Show it, then, if you are truthful.
26:32
فَاَلۡقٰی عَصَاہُ فَاِذَا ہِیَ ثُعۡبَانٌ مُّبِیۡنٌ ﴿ۚۖ۳۲﴾
So he threw down his staff, and lo! it was an obvious snake;
26:33
وَّ نَزَعَ یَدَہٗ فَاِذَا ہِیَ بَیۡضَآءُ لِلنّٰظِرِیۡنَ ﴿٪۳۳﴾
and he drew forth his hand, and lo! it appeared white to the onlookers.

Section 3 (Verses 26:34–26:51): Moses and the Enchanters

26:34
قَالَ لِلۡمَلَاِ حَوۡلَہٗۤ اِنَّ ہٰذَا لَسٰحِرٌ عَلِیۡمٌ ﴿ۙ۳۴﴾
(Pharaoh) said to the chiefs around him: Surely this is a skilful enchanter,
26:35
یُّرِیۡدُ اَنۡ یُّخۡرِجَکُمۡ مِّنۡ اَرۡضِکُمۡ بِسِحۡرِہٖ ٭ۖ فَمَا ذَا تَاۡمُرُوۡنَ ﴿۳۵﴾
who desires to turn you out of your land with his enchantment. What is it then that you advise?
26:36
قَالُوۡۤا اَرۡجِہۡ وَ اَخَاہُ وَ ابۡعَثۡ فِی الۡمَدَآئِنِ حٰشِرِیۡنَ ﴿ۙ۳۶﴾
They said: Put him off and his brother and send heralds into the cities
26:37
یَاۡتُوۡکَ بِکُلِّ سَحَّارٍ عَلِیۡمٍ ﴿۳۷﴾
that they bring to you every skilful enchanter.
26:38
فَجُمِعَ السَّحَرَۃُ لِمِیۡقَاتِ یَوۡمٍ مَّعۡلُوۡمٍ ﴿ۙ۳۸﴾
So the enchanters were gathered together for the appointment of a well-known day,
26:39
وَّ قِیۡلَ لِلنَّاسِ ہَلۡ اَنۡتُمۡ مُّجۡتَمِعُوۡنَ ﴿ۙ۳۹﴾
and it was said to the people: Will you gather together?
26:40
لَعَلَّنَا نَتَّبِعُ السَّحَرَۃَ اِنۡ کَانُوۡا ہُمُ الۡغٰلِبِیۡنَ ﴿۴۰﴾
Perhaps we may follow the enchanters, if they are triumphant.
26:41
فَلَمَّا جَآءَ السَّحَرَۃُ قَالُوۡا لِفِرۡعَوۡنَ اَئِنَّ لَنَا لَاَجۡرًا اِنۡ کُنَّا نَحۡنُ الۡغٰلِبِیۡنَ ﴿۴۱﴾
So when the enchanters came, they said to Pharaoh: Will there be a reward for us, if we are triumphant?
26:42
قَالَ نَعَمۡ وَ اِنَّکُمۡ اِذًا لَّمِنَ الۡمُقَرَّبِیۡنَ ﴿۴۲﴾
He said: Yes, and surely you will then be among those who are nearest (to me).
26:43
قَالَ لَہُمۡ مُّوۡسٰۤی اَلۡقُوۡا مَاۤ اَنۡتُمۡ مُّلۡقُوۡنَ ﴿۴۳﴾
Moses said to them: Throw down what you are going to throw.
26:44
فَاَلۡقَوۡا حِبَالَہُمۡ وَ عِصِیَّہُمۡ وَ قَالُوۡا بِعِزَّۃِ فِرۡعَوۡنَ اِنَّا لَنَحۡنُ الۡغٰلِبُوۡنَ ﴿۴۴﴾
So they threw down their cords and their rods and said: By Pharaoh’s power we shall most surely be victorious.
26:45
فَاَلۡقٰی مُوۡسٰی عَصَاہُ فَاِذَا ہِیَ تَلۡقَفُ مَا یَاۡفِکُوۡنَ ﴿ۚۖ۴۵﴾
Then Moses threw down his staff, and lo! it swallowed up their fabrication.
26:46
فَاُلۡقِیَ السَّحَرَۃُ سٰجِدِیۡنَ ﴿ۙ۴۶﴾
And the enchanters were thrown down prostrate —
26:47
قَالُوۡۤا اٰمَنَّا بِرَبِّ الۡعٰلَمِیۡنَ ﴿ۙ۴۷﴾
They said: We believe in the Lord of the worlds,
26:48
رَبِّ مُوۡسٰی وَ ہٰرُوۡنَ ﴿۴۸﴾
the Lord of Moses and Aaron.
26:49
قَالَ اٰمَنۡتُمۡ لَہٗ قَبۡلَ اَنۡ اٰذَنَ لَکُمۡ ۚ اِنَّہٗ لَکَبِیۡرُکُمُ الَّذِیۡ عَلَّمَکُمُ السِّحۡرَ ۚ فَلَسَوۡفَ تَعۡلَمُوۡنَ ۬ؕ لَاُقَطِّعَنَّ اَیۡدِیَکُمۡ وَ اَرۡجُلَکُمۡ مِّنۡ خِلَافٍ وَّ لَاُوصَلِّبَنَّکُمۡ اَجۡمَعِیۡنَ ﴿ۚ۴۹﴾
(Pharaoh) said: You believe in him before I give you permission; surely he is the chief of you who taught you enchantment, so you will soon come to know. Certainly I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will crucify you all.
26:50
قَالُوۡا لَا ضَیۡرَ ۫ اِنَّاۤ اِلٰی رَبِّنَا مُنۡقَلِبُوۡنَ ﴿ۚ۵۰﴾
They said: No harm; surely to our Lord we return.
26:51
اِنَّا نَطۡمَعُ اَنۡ یَّغۡفِرَ لَنَا رَبُّنَا خَطٰیٰنَاۤ اَنۡ کُنَّاۤ اَوَّلَ الۡمُؤۡمِنِیۡنَ ﴿ؕ٪۵۱﴾
We hope that our Lord will forgive us our wrongs because we are the first of the believers.

Section 4 (Verses 26:52–26:68): Moses is Delivered and Pharaoh Drowned

26:52
وَ اَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ اِلٰی مُوۡسٰۤی اَنۡ اَسۡرِ بِعِبَادِیۡۤ اِنَّکُمۡ مُّتَّبَعُوۡنَ ﴿۵۲﴾
And We revealed to Moses, saying: Travel by night with My servants — you will be pursued.
26:53
فَاَرۡسَلَ فِرۡعَوۡنُ فِی الۡمَدَآئِنِ حٰشِرِیۡنَ ﴿ۚ۵۳﴾
And Pharaoh sent heralds into the cities (proclaiming):
26:54
اِنَّ ہٰۤؤُلَآءِ لَشِرۡ ذِمَۃٌ قَلِیۡلُوۡنَ ﴿ۙ۵۴﴾
These are indeed a small band,
26:55
وَ اِنَّہُمۡ لَنَا لَغَآئِظُوۡنَ ﴿ۙ۵۵﴾
and they have surely enraged us,
26:56
وَ اِنَّا لَجَمِیۡعٌ حٰذِرُوۡنَ ﴿ؕ۵۶﴾
and we are truly a vigilant multitude.
26:57
فَاَخۡرَجۡنٰہُمۡ مِّنۡ جَنّٰتٍ وَّ عُیُوۡنٍ ﴿ۙ۵۷﴾
So We turned them out of gardens and springs,
26:58
وَّ کُنُوۡزٍ وَّ مَقَامٍ کَرِیۡمٍ ﴿ۙ۵۸﴾
and treasures and goodly dwellings —
26:59
کَذٰلِکَ ؕ وَ اَوۡرَثۡنٰہَا بَنِیۡۤ اِسۡرَآءِیۡلَ ﴿ؕ۵۹﴾
Even so. And We gave them as a heritage to the Children of Israel.
The pronoun them refers to gardens and springs, etc., in general, and not to the particular gardens, etc., from which the Egyptians were turned out. The heritage of gardens and treasures was given to the Israelites in the land of Canaan, the promised land flowing with milk and honey.
26:60
فَاَتۡبَعُوۡہُمۡ مُّشۡرِقِیۡنَ ﴿۶۰﴾
Then they pursued them at sunrise.
26:61
فَلَمَّا تَرَآءَ الۡجَمۡعٰنِ قَالَ اَصۡحٰبُ مُوۡسٰۤی اِنَّا لَمُدۡرَکُوۡنَ ﴿ۚ۶۱﴾
So when the two groups saw each other, the companions of Moses cried out: Surely we are overtaken.
26:62
قَالَ کَلَّا ۚ اِنَّ مَعِیَ رَبِّیۡ سَیَہۡدِیۡنِ ﴿۶۲﴾
He said: By no means; surely my Lord is with me — He will guide me.
26:63
فَاَوۡحَیۡنَاۤ اِلٰی مُوۡسٰۤی اَنِ اضۡرِبۡ بِّعَصَاکَ الۡبَحۡرَ ؕ فَانۡفَلَقَ فَکَانَ کُلُّ فِرۡقٍ کَالطَّوۡدِ الۡعَظِیۡمِ ﴿ۚ۶۳﴾
Then We revealed to Moses: March on to the sea with your staff. So it parted, and each side was like a huge mound.
This expression is similar to the one occurring in 2:60: “March on to the rock with your staff”. Elsewhere the same idea is expressed by saying: “Strike for them a dry path in the sea, not fearing to be overtaken, nor being afraid” (20:77); see also 2:50.
26:64
وَ اَزۡلَفۡنَا ثَمَّ الۡاٰخَرِیۡنَ ﴿ۚ۶۴﴾
And there We brought the others near.
26:65
وَ اَنۡجَیۡنَا مُوۡسٰی وَ مَنۡ مَّعَہٗۤ اَجۡمَعِیۡنَ ﴿ۚ۶۵﴾
And We saved Moses and those with him, all.
26:66
ثُمَّ اَغۡرَقۡنَا الۡاٰخَرِیۡنَ ﴿ؕ۶۶﴾
Then We drowned the others.
26:67
اِنَّ فِیۡ ذٰلِکَ لَاٰیَۃً ؕ وَ مَا کَانَ اَکۡثَرُہُمۡ مُّؤۡمِنِیۡنَ ﴿۶۷﴾
Surely there is a sign in this, yet most of them do not believe.
26:68
وَ اِنَّ رَبَّکَ لَہُوَ الۡعَزِیۡزُ الرَّحِیۡمُ ﴿٪۶۸﴾
And surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful.

Section 5 (Verses 26:69–26:104): History of Abraham

26:69
وَ اتۡلُ عَلَیۡہِمۡ نَبَاَ اِبۡرٰہِیۡمَ ﴿ۘ۶۹﴾
And recite to them the story of Abraham.
26:70
اِذۡ قَالَ لِاَبِیۡہِ وَ قَوۡمِہٖ مَا تَعۡبُدُوۡنَ ﴿۷۰﴾
When he said to his sire and his people: What do you worship?
26:71
قَالُوۡا نَعۡبُدُ اَصۡنَامًا فَنَظَلُّ لَہَا عٰکِفِیۡنَ ﴿۷۱﴾
They said: We worship idols, so we shall remain devoted to them.
26:72
قَالَ ہَلۡ یَسۡمَعُوۡنَکُمۡ اِذۡ تَدۡعُوۡنَ ﴿ۙ۷۲﴾
He said: Do they hear you when you call (on them),
26:73
اَوۡ یَنۡفَعُوۡنَکُمۡ اَوۡ یَضُرُّوۡنَ ﴿۷۳﴾
or do they benefit or harm you?
26:74
قَالُوۡا بَلۡ وَجَدۡنَاۤ اٰبَآءَنَا کَذٰلِکَ یَفۡعَلُوۡنَ ﴿۷۴﴾
They said: But we found our fathers doing so.
26:75
قَالَ اَفَرَءَیۡتُمۡ مَّا کُنۡتُمۡ تَعۡبُدُوۡنَ ﴿ۙ۷۵﴾
He said: Do you then see what you worship —
26:76
اَنۡتُمۡ وَ اٰبَآؤُکُمُ الۡاَقۡدَمُوۡنَ ﴿۫ۖ۷۶﴾
you and your ancient sires?
26:77
فَاِنَّہُمۡ عَدُوٌّ لِّیۡۤ اِلَّا رَبَّ الۡعٰلَمِیۡنَ ﴿ۙ۷۷﴾
Surely they are an enemy to me, but not (so) the Lord of the worlds,
26:78
الَّذِیۡ خَلَقَنِیۡ فَہُوَ یَہۡدِیۡنِ ﴿ۙ۷۸﴾
Who created me, then He shows me the way,
26:79
وَ الَّذِیۡ ہُوَ یُطۡعِمُنِیۡ وَ یَسۡقِیۡنِ ﴿ۙ۷۹﴾
and Who gives me to eat and to drink,
26:80
وَ اِذَا مَرِضۡتُ فَہُوَ یَشۡفِیۡنِ ﴿۪ۙ۸۰﴾
and when I am sick, He heals me,
26:81
وَ الَّذِیۡ یُمِیۡتُنِیۡ ثُمَّ یُحۡیِیۡنِ ﴿ۙ۸۱﴾
and Who will cause me to die, then give me life,
26:82
وَ الَّذِیۡۤ اَطۡمَعُ اَنۡ یَّغۡفِرَ لِیۡ خَطِیۡٓئَتِیۡ یَوۡمَ الدِّیۡنِ ﴿ؕ۸۲﴾
and Who, I hope, will forgive me my mistakes on the day of Judgment.
The prophets, being always conscious of their weakness, seek Allah’s protection. Expressions like this invariably indicate human weakness before Divine perfection, and are not evidence of sinfulness. Compare Jesus’ confession of weakness in a similar strain: “Why do you call me good? No one is good but One, that is, God” (Matthew, 19:17).
26:83
رَبِّ ہَبۡ لِیۡ حُکۡمًا وَّ اَلۡحِقۡنِیۡ بِالصّٰلِحِیۡنَ ﴿ۙ۸۳﴾
My Lord, grant me wisdom, and join me with the righteous,
26:84
وَ اجۡعَلۡ لِّیۡ لِسَانَ صِدۡقٍ فِی الۡاٰخِرِیۡنَ ﴿ۙ۸۴﴾
and ordain for me a goodly mention in later generations,
26:85
وَ اجۡعَلۡنِیۡ مِنۡ وَّرَثَۃِ جَنَّۃِ النَّعِیۡمِ ﴿ۙ۸۵﴾
and make me from among the heirs of the Garden of bliss,
26:86
وَ اغۡفِرۡ لِاَبِیۡۤ اِنَّہٗ کَانَ مِنَ الضَّآلِّیۡنَ ﴿ۙ۸۶﴾
and forgive my sire, surely he is in error,
26:87
وَ لَا تُخۡزِنِیۡ یَوۡمَ یُبۡعَثُوۡنَ ﴿ۙ۸۷﴾
and do not disgrace me on the day when they are raised —
26:88
یَوۡمَ لَا یَنۡفَعُ مَالٌ وَّ لَا بَنُوۡنَ ﴿ۙ۸۸﴾
the day when wealth will not avail, nor sons,
26:89
اِلَّا مَنۡ اَتَی اللّٰہَ بِقَلۡبٍ سَلِیۡمٍ ﴿ؕ۸۹﴾
except him who comes to Allah with a sound heart.
26:90
وَ اُزۡلِفَتِ الۡجَنَّۃُ لِلۡمُتَّقِیۡنَ ﴿ۙ۹۰﴾
And the Garden is brought near for the dutiful,
26:91
وَ بُرِّزَتِ الۡجَحِیۡمُ لِلۡغٰوِیۡنَ ﴿ۙ۹۱﴾
and hell is made manifest to the deviators,
The making manifest of hell shows that it already exists, but is hidden from the human eye, while on the day of Resurrection it will be made plain.
26:92
وَ قِیۡلَ لَہُمۡ اَیۡنَمَا کُنۡتُمۡ تَعۡبُدُوۡنَ ﴿ۙ۹۲﴾
and it is said to them: Where are those that you worshipped
26:93
مِنۡ دُوۡنِ اللّٰہِ ؕ ہَلۡ یَنۡصُرُوۡنَکُمۡ اَوۡ یَنۡتَصِرُوۡنَ ﴿ؕ۹۳﴾
besides Allah? Can they help you or help themselves?
26:94
فَکُبۡکِبُوۡا فِیۡہَا ہُمۡ وَ الۡغَاوٗنَ ﴿ۙ۹۴﴾
So they are hurled into it, they and the deviators,
26:95
وَ جُنُوۡدُ اِبۡلِیۡسَ اَجۡمَعُوۡنَ ﴿ؕ۹۵﴾
and the followers of the devil, all.
26:96
قَالُوۡا وَ ہُمۡ فِیۡہَا یَخۡتَصِمُوۡنَ ﴿ۙ۹۶﴾
They will say, while they quarrel in it:
26:97
تَاللّٰہِ اِنۡ کُنَّا لَفِیۡ ضَلٰلٍ مُّبِیۡنٍ ﴿ۙ۹۷﴾
By Allah! We were certainly in manifest error,
26:98
اِذۡ نُسَوِّیۡکُمۡ بِرَبِّ الۡعٰلَمِیۡنَ ﴿۹۸﴾
when we made you equal with the Lord of the worlds.
26:99
وَ مَاۤ اَضَلَّنَاۤ اِلَّا الۡمُجۡرِمُوۡنَ ﴿۹۹﴾
And none but the guilty led us astray.
26:100
فَمَا لَنَا مِنۡ شَافِعِیۡنَ ﴿۱۰۰﴾ۙ
So we have no intercessors,
26:101
وَ لَا صَدِیۡقٍ حَمِیۡمٍ ﴿۱۰۱﴾
nor a true friend.
26:102
فَلَوۡ اَنَّ لَنَا کَرَّۃً فَنَکُوۡنَ مِنَ الۡمُؤۡمِنِیۡنَ ﴿۱۰۲﴾
Now, if only we could return once, we would be believers.
26:103
اِنَّ فِیۡ ذٰلِکَ لَاٰیَۃً ؕ وَ مَا کَانَ اَکۡثَرُہُمۡ مُّؤۡمِنِیۡنَ ﴿۱۰۳﴾
Surely there is a sign in this, yet most of them do not believe.
26:104
وَ اِنَّ رَبَّکَ لَہُوَ الۡعَزِیۡزُ الرَّحِیۡمُ ﴿۱۰۴﴾٪
And surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful.

Section 6 (Verses 26:105–26:122): History of Noah

26:105
کَذَّبَتۡ قَوۡمُ نُوۡحِۣ الۡمُرۡسَلِیۡنَ ﴿۱۰۵﴾ۚۖ
The people of Noah rejected the messengers.
26:106
اِذۡ قَالَ لَہُمۡ اَخُوۡہُمۡ نُوۡحٌ اَلَا تَتَّقُوۡنَ ﴿۱۰۶﴾ۚ
When their brother Noah said to them: Will you not guard against evil?
26:107
اِنِّیۡ لَکُمۡ رَسُوۡلٌ اَمِیۡنٌ ﴿۱۰۷﴾ۙ
Surely I am a faithful messenger to you:
26:108
فَاتَّقُوا اللّٰہَ وَ اَطِیۡعُوۡنِ ﴿۱۰۸﴾ۚ
So keep your duty to Allah and obey me.
26:109
وَ مَاۤ اَسۡـَٔلُکُمۡ عَلَیۡہِ مِنۡ اَجۡرٍ ۚ اِنۡ اَجۡرِیَ اِلَّا عَلٰی رَبِّ الۡعٰلَمِیۡنَ ﴿۱۰۹﴾ۚ
And I ask of you no reward for it: my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds.
26:110
فَاتَّقُوا اللّٰہَ وَ اَطِیۡعُوۡنِ ﴿۱۱۰﴾ؕ
So keep your duty to Allah and obey me.
26:111
قَالُوۡۤا اَنُؤۡمِنُ لَکَ وَ اتَّبَعَکَ الۡاَرۡذَلُوۡنَ ﴿۱۱۱﴾ؕ
They said: Shall we believe in you when the lowest (people) follow you?
26:112
قَالَ وَ مَا عِلۡمِیۡ بِمَا کَانُوۡا یَعۡمَلُوۡنَ ﴿۱۱۲﴾ۚ
He said: And what knowledge do I have of what they did?
26:113
اِنۡ حِسَابُہُمۡ اِلَّا عَلٰی رَبِّیۡ لَوۡ تَشۡعُرُوۡنَ ﴿۱۱۳﴾ۚ
Their reckoning is only with my Lord, if you could perceive.
26:114
وَ مَاۤ اَنَا بِطَارِدِ الۡمُؤۡمِنِیۡنَ ﴿۱۱۴﴾ۚ
And I am not going to drive away the believers;
26:115
اِنۡ اَنَا اِلَّا نَذِیۡرٌ مُّبِیۡنٌ ﴿۱۱۵﴾ؕ
I am only a plain warner.
26:116
قَالُوۡا لَئِنۡ لَّمۡ تَنۡتَہِ یٰنُوۡحُ لَتَکُوۡنَنَّ مِنَ الۡمَرۡجُوۡمِیۡنَ ﴿۱۱۶﴾ؕ
They said: If you do not give up, Noah, you will certainly be stoned to death.
26:117
قَالَ رَبِّ اِنَّ قَوۡمِیۡ کَذَّبُوۡنِ ﴿۱۱۷﴾ۚۖ
He said: My Lord, my people call me a liar.
26:118
فَافۡتَحۡ بَیۡنِیۡ وَ بَیۡنَہُمۡ فَتۡحًا وَّ نَجِّنِیۡ وَ مَنۡ مَّعِیَ مِنَ الۡمُؤۡمِنِیۡنَ ﴿۱۱۸﴾
So judge between me and them openly, and deliver me and the believers who are with me.
26:119
فَاَنۡجَیۡنٰہُ وَ مَنۡ مَّعَہٗ فِی الۡفُلۡکِ الۡمَشۡحُوۡنِ ﴿۱۱۹﴾ۚ
So We delivered him and those with him in the laden ark.
26:120
ثُمَّ اَغۡرَقۡنَا بَعۡدُ الۡبٰقِیۡنَ ﴿۱۲۰﴾ؕ
Then We drowned the rest afterwards.
Wherever Noah is mentioned, only such of his people are spoken of as having been drowned who rejected and persecuted him; see also 11:42 footnote.
26:121
اِنَّ فِیۡ ذٰلِکَ لَاٰیَۃً ؕ وَ مَا کَانَ اَکۡثَرُہُمۡ مُّؤۡمِنِیۡنَ ﴿۱۲۱﴾
Surely there is a sign in this, yet most of them do not believe.
26:122
وَ اِنَّ رَبَّکَ لَہُوَ الۡعَزِیۡزُ الرَّحِیۡمُ ﴿۱۲۲﴾٪
And surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful.

Section 7 (Verses 26:123–26:140): History of Hud

26:123
کَذَّبَتۡ عَادُۨ الۡمُرۡسَلِیۡنَ ﴿۱۲۳﴾ۚۖ
Ād rejected the messengers.
26:124
اِذۡ قَالَ لَہُمۡ اَخُوۡہُمۡ ہُوۡدٌ اَلَا تَتَّقُوۡنَ ﴿۱۲۴﴾ۚ
When their brother Hūd said to them: Will you not guard against evil?
26:125
اِنِّیۡ لَکُمۡ رَسُوۡلٌ اَمِیۡنٌ ﴿۱۲۵﴾ۙ
Surely I am a faithful messenger to you:
26:126
فَاتَّقُوا اللّٰہَ وَ اَطِیۡعُوۡنِ ﴿۱۲۶﴾ۚ
So keep your duty to Allah and obey me.
26:127
وَ مَاۤ اَسۡـَٔلُکُمۡ عَلَیۡہِ مِنۡ اَجۡرٍ ۚ اِنۡ اَجۡرِیَ اِلَّا عَلٰی رَبِّ الۡعٰلَمِیۡنَ ﴿۱۲۷﴾ؕ
And I ask of you no reward for it: my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds.
26:128
اَتَبۡنُوۡنَ بِکُلِّ رِیۡعٍ اٰیَۃً تَعۡبَثُوۡنَ ﴿۱۲۸﴾
Do you build on every height a monument, being vain?
The word āyat, literally a sign, is used here to indicate the lofty building that should acquire renown as a sign of greatness. These lofty buildings were, no doubt, used to terrorize others, as v. 130 shows that acts of cruelty and violence were committed by Ād, while they considered themselves safe in their fortresses.
26:129
وَ تَتَّخِذُوۡنَ مَصَانِعَ لَعَلَّکُمۡ تَخۡلُدُوۡنَ ﴿۱۲۹﴾ۚ
And you make fortresses that you may abide forever.
26:130
وَ اِذَا بَطَشۡتُمۡ بَطَشۡتُمۡ جَبَّارِیۡنَ ﴿۱۳۰﴾ۚ
And when you seize (people), you seize as tyrants.
26:131
فَاتَّقُوا اللّٰہَ وَ اَطِیۡعُوۡنِ ﴿۱۳۱﴾ۚ
So keep your duty to Allah and obey me.
26:132
وَ اتَّقُوا الَّذِیۡۤ اَمَدَّکُمۡ بِمَا تَعۡلَمُوۡنَ ﴿۱۳۲﴾ۚ
And keep your duty to Him Who aids you with what you know —
26:133
اَمَدَّکُمۡ بِاَنۡعَامٍ وَّ بَنِیۡنَ ﴿۱۳۳﴾ۚۙ
He aids you with cattle and children
26:134
وَ جَنّٰتٍ وَّ عُیُوۡنٍ ﴿۱۳۴﴾ۚ
and gardens and fountains.
26:135
اِنِّیۡۤ اَخَافُ عَلَیۡکُمۡ عَذَابَ یَوۡمٍ عَظِیۡمٍ ﴿۱۳۵﴾ؕ
Surely I fear for you the punishment of a grievous day.
26:136
قَالُوۡا سَوَآءٌ عَلَیۡنَاۤ اَوَ عَظۡتَ اَمۡ لَمۡ تَکُنۡ مِّنَ الۡوٰعِظِیۡنَ ﴿۱۳۶﴾ۙ
They said: It is the same to us whether you admonish or do not admonish;
26:137
اِنۡ ہٰذَاۤ اِلَّا خُلُقُ الۡاَوَّلِیۡنَ ﴿۱۳۷﴾ۙ
this is only a fabrication of the ancients,
26:138
وَ مَا نَحۡنُ بِمُعَذَّبِیۡنَ ﴿۱۳۸﴾ۚ
and we will not be punished.
26:139
فَکَذَّبُوۡہُ فَاَہۡلَکۡنٰہُمۡ ؕ اِنَّ فِیۡ ذٰلِکَ لَاٰیَۃً ؕ وَ مَا کَانَ اَکۡثَرُہُمۡ مُّؤۡمِنِیۡنَ ﴿۱۳۹﴾
So they rejected him, then We destroyed them. Surely there is a sign in this, yet most of them do not believe.
26:140
وَ اِنَّ رَبَّکَ لَہُوَ الۡعَزِیۡزُ الرَّحِیۡمُ ﴿۱۴۰﴾٪
And surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful.

Section 8 (Verses 26:141–26:159): History of Salih

26:141
کَذَّبَتۡ ثَمُوۡدُ الۡمُرۡسَلِیۡنَ ﴿۱۴۱﴾ۚۖ
Thamūd rejected the messengers.
26:142
اِذۡ قَالَ لَہُمۡ اَخُوۡہُمۡ صٰلِحٌ اَلَا تَتَّقُوۡنَ ﴿۱۴۲﴾ۚ
When their brother Sālih said to them: Will you not guard against evil?
26:143
اِنِّیۡ لَکُمۡ رَسُوۡلٌ اَمِیۡنٌ ﴿۱۴۳﴾ۙ
Surely I am a faithful messenger to you:
26:144
فَاتَّقُوا اللّٰہَ وَ اَطِیۡعُوۡنِ ﴿۱۴۴﴾ۚ
So keep your duty to Allah and obey me.
26:145
وَ مَاۤ اَسۡـَٔلُکُمۡ عَلَیۡہِ مِنۡ اَجۡرٍ ۚ اِنۡ اَجۡرِیَ اِلَّا عَلٰی رَبِّ الۡعٰلَمِیۡنَ ﴿۱۴۵﴾ؕ
And I ask of you no reward for it: my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds.
26:146
اَتُتۡرَکُوۡنَ فِیۡ مَا ہٰہُنَاۤ اٰمِنِیۡنَ ﴿۱۴۶﴾ۙ
Will you be left secure in what is here,
26:147
فِیۡ جَنّٰتٍ وَّ عُیُوۡنٍ ﴿۱۴۷﴾ۙ
in gardens and fountains,
26:148
وَّ زُرُوۡعٍ وَّ نَخۡلٍ طَلۡعُہَا ہَضِیۡمٌ ﴿۱۴۸﴾ۚ
and corn-fields and palm-trees having fine flower-spikes?
26:149
وَ تَنۡحِتُوۡنَ مِنَ الۡجِبَالِ بُیُوۡتًا فٰرِہِیۡنَ ﴿۱۴۹﴾ۚ
And you carve houses out of the mountains exultingly.
26:150
فَاتَّقُوا اللّٰہَ وَ اَطِیۡعُوۡنِ ﴿۱۵۰﴾ۚ
So keep your duty to Allah and obey me.
26:151
وَ لَا تُطِیۡعُوۡۤا اَمۡرَ الۡمُسۡرِفِیۡنَ ﴿۱۵۱﴾ۙ
And do not obey the bidding of the extravagant,
26:152
الَّذِیۡنَ یُفۡسِدُوۡنَ فِی الۡاَرۡضِ وَ لَا یُصۡلِحُوۡنَ ﴿۱۵۲﴾
who make mischief in the land and do not act rightly.
26:153
قَالُوۡۤا اِنَّمَاۤ اَنۡتَ مِنَ الۡمُسَحَّرِیۡنَ ﴿۱۵۳﴾ۚ
They said: You are only a deluded person.
26:154
مَاۤ اَنۡتَ اِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِّثۡلُنَا ۚۖ فَاۡتِ بِاٰیَۃٍ اِنۡ کُنۡتَ مِنَ الصّٰدِقِیۡنَ ﴿۱۵۴﴾
You are nothing but a mortal like ourselves — so bring a sign if you are truthful.
26:155
قَالَ ہٰذِہٖ نَاقَۃٌ لَّہَا شِرۡبٌ وَّ لَکُمۡ شِرۡبُ یَوۡمٍ مَّعۡلُوۡمٍ ﴿۱۵۵﴾ۚ
He said: This is a she-camel; she has her portion of water, and you have your portion of water at an appointed time.
See 7:73 for Thamūd. They are described in v. 149 as carving houses out of the mountains, and, as it appears from here and 54:28, the springs of water seem to have been few, and access to these was probably specially guarded, so that they were open only at particular times. For the she-camel, see 7:73. Sālih seems to have demanded that the she-camel should be allowed to drink at such times. See 54:28, where it is stated that every share of the water will be attended by the she-camel, or that she will have access to water at all times when the others are allowed to drink. A similar demand as regards her pasture is contained in 11:64 in the words “Leave her to pasture on Allah’s earth”, followed by the same words as those following this demand for drink: “And do her no harm”.
26:156
وَ لَا تَمَسُّوۡہَا بِسُوۡٓءٍ فَیَاۡخُذَکُمۡ عَذَابُ یَوۡمٍ عَظِیۡمٍ ﴿۱۵۶﴾
And do her no harm, or the punishment of a grievous day will befall you.
26:157
فَعَقَرُوۡہَا فَاَصۡبَحُوۡا نٰدِمِیۡنَ ﴿۱۵۷﴾ۙ
But they hamstrung her, then regretted,
26:158
فَاَخَذَہُمُ الۡعَذَابُ ؕ اِنَّ فِیۡ ذٰلِکَ لَاٰیَۃً ؕ وَ مَا کَانَ اَکۡثَرُہُمۡ مُّؤۡمِنِیۡنَ ﴿۱۵۸﴾
so the punishment befell them. Surely there is a sign in this, yet most of them do not believe.
26:159
وَ اِنَّ رَبَّکَ لَہُوَ الۡعَزِیۡزُ الرَّحِیۡمُ ﴿۱۵۹﴾٪
And surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful.

Section 9 (Verses 26:160–26:175): History of Lot

26:160
کَذَّبَتۡ قَوۡمُ لُوۡطِۣ الۡمُرۡسَلِیۡنَ ﴿۱۶۰﴾ۚۖ
The people of Lot rejected the messengers.
26:161
اِذۡ قَالَ لَہُمۡ اَخُوۡہُمۡ لُوۡطٌ اَلَا تَتَّقُوۡنَ ﴿۱۶۱﴾ۚ
When their brother Lot said to them: Will you not guard against evil?
26:163
اِنِّیۡ لَکُمۡ رَسُوۡلٌ اَمِیۡنٌ ﴿۱۶۲﴾ۙ
So keep your duty to Allah and obey me.
26:164
فَاتَّقُوا اللّٰہَ وَ اَطِیۡعُوۡنِ ﴿۱۶۳﴾ۚ
And I ask of you no reward for it: my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds.
26:165
اَتَاۡتُوۡنَ الذُّکۡرَانَ مِنَ الۡعٰلَمِیۡنَ ﴿۱۶۵﴾ۙ
Do you come to the males from among the creation,
26:166
وَ تَذَرُوۡنَ مَا خَلَقَ لَکُمۡ رَبُّکُمۡ مِّنۡ اَزۡوَاجِکُمۡ ؕ بَلۡ اَنۡتُمۡ قَوۡمٌ عٰدُوۡنَ ﴿۱۶۶﴾
and leave your wives whom your Lord has created for you? Indeed, you are a people exceeding limits.
26:167
قَالُوۡا لَئِنۡ لَّمۡ تَنۡتَہِ یٰلُوۡطُ لَتَکُوۡنَنَّ مِنَ الۡمُخۡرَجِیۡنَ ﴿۱۶۷﴾
They said: If you do not give up, Lot, you will surely be banished.
26:168
قَالَ اِنِّیۡ لِعَمَلِکُمۡ مِّنَ الۡقَالِیۡنَ ﴿۱۶۸﴾ؕ
He said: Surely I abhor what you do.
26:169
رَبِّ نَجِّنِیۡ وَ اَہۡلِیۡ مِمَّا یَعۡمَلُوۡنَ ﴿۱۶۹﴾
My Lord, deliver me and my followers from what they do.
26:170
فَنَجَّیۡنٰہُ وَ اَہۡلَہٗۤ اَجۡمَعِیۡنَ ﴿۱۷۰﴾ۙ
So We delivered him and his followers all,
26:171
اِلَّا عَجُوۡزًا فِی الۡغٰبِرِیۡنَ ﴿۱۷۱﴾ۚ
except an old woman, among those who remained behind.
See 7:80 for Lot. The old woman referred to here was Lot’s wife.
26:172
ثُمَّ دَمَّرۡنَا الۡاٰخَرِیۡنَ ﴿۱۷۲﴾ۚ
Then We destroyed the others.
26:173
وَ اَمۡطَرۡنَا عَلَیۡہِمۡ مَّطَرًا ۚ فَسَآءَ مَطَرُ الۡمُنۡذَرِیۡنَ ﴿۱۷۳﴾
And We rained on them a rain; and evil was the rain on those who were warned.
See 7:84. Stones were rained on them as the result of a volcanic eruption.
26:174
اِنَّ فِیۡ ذٰلِکَ لَاٰیَۃً ؕ وَ مَا کَانَ اَکۡثَرُہُمۡ مُّؤۡمِنِیۡنَ ﴿۱۷۴﴾
Surely there is a sign in this, yet most of them do not believe.
26:175
وَ اِنَّ رَبَّکَ لَہُوَ الۡعَزِیۡزُ الرَّحِیۡمُ ﴿۱۷۵﴾٪
And surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful.

Section 10 (Verses 26:176–26:191): History of Shuaib

26:176
کَذَّبَ اَصۡحٰبُ لۡـَٔـیۡکَۃِ الۡمُرۡسَلِیۡنَ ﴿۱۷۶﴾ۚۖ
The dwellers of the grove rejected the messengers.
They are the same as the people of Midian.
26:177
اِذۡ قَالَ لَہُمۡ شُعَیۡبٌ اَلَا تَتَّقُوۡنَ ﴿۱۷۷﴾ۚ
When Shuaib said to them: Will you not guard against evil?
26:178
اِنِّیۡ لَکُمۡ رَسُوۡلٌ اَمِیۡنٌ ﴿۱۷۸﴾ۙ
Surely I am a faithful messenger to you:
26:179
فَاتَّقُوا اللّٰہَ وَ اَطِیۡعُوۡنِ ﴿۱۷۹﴾ۚ
So keep your duty to Allah and obey me.
26:180
وَ مَاۤ اَسۡـَٔلُکُمۡ عَلَیۡہِ مِنۡ اَجۡرٍ ۚ اِنۡ اَجۡرِیَ اِلَّا عَلٰی رَبِّ الۡعٰلَمِیۡنَ ﴿۱۸۰﴾ؕ
And I ask of you no reward for it: my reward is only with the Lord of the worlds.
26:181
اَوۡفُوا الۡکَیۡلَ وَ لَا تَکُوۡنُوۡا مِنَ الۡمُخۡسِرِیۡنَ ﴿۱۸۱﴾ۚ
Give full measure and do not diminish.
26:182
وَ زِنُوۡا بِالۡقِسۡطَاسِ الۡمُسۡتَقِیۡمِ ﴿۱۸۲﴾ۚ
And weigh with a true balance.
26:183
وَ لَا تَبۡخَسُوا النَّاسَ اَشۡیَآءَہُمۡ وَ لَا تَعۡثَوۡا فِی الۡاَرۡضِ مُفۡسِدِیۡنَ ﴿۱۸۳﴾ۚ
And do not wrong people of their dues, nor act corruptly in the earth, making mischief.
26:184
وَ اتَّقُوا الَّذِیۡ خَلَقَکُمۡ وَ الۡجِبِلَّۃَ الۡاَوَّلِیۡنَ ﴿۱۸۴﴾ؕ
And keep your duty to Him Who created you and the former generations.
26:185
قَالُوۡۤا اِنَّمَاۤ اَنۡتَ مِنَ الۡمُسَحَّرِیۡنَ ﴿۱۸۵﴾ۙ
They said: You are only a deluded person,
26:186
وَ مَاۤ اَنۡتَ اِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِّثۡلُنَا وَ اِنۡ نَّظُنُّکَ لَمِنَ الۡکٰذِبِیۡنَ ﴿۱۸۶﴾ۚ
and you are nothing but a mortal like ourselves, and we think you are a liar.
26:187
فَاَسۡقِطۡ عَلَیۡنَا کِسَفًا مِّنَ السَّمَآءِ اِنۡ کُنۡتَ مِنَ الصّٰدِقِیۡنَ ﴿۱۸۷﴾ؕ
So cause a portion of the heaven to fall on us, if you are truthful.
A portion of the heaven signifies a punishment from heaven.
26:188
قَالَ رَبِّیۡۤ اَعۡلَمُ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُوۡنَ ﴿۱۸۸﴾
He said: My Lord knows best what you do.
The demand for the threatened punishment is always met with expressions signifying that the matter rests in the hands of Allah. Such statements are really equivalent to saying that the thing will certainly come to pass.
26:189
فَکَذَّبُوۡہُ فَاَخَذَہُمۡ عَذَابُ یَوۡمِ الظُّلَّۃِ ؕ اِنَّہٗ کَانَ عَذَابَ یَوۡمٍ عَظِیۡمٍ ﴿۱۸۹﴾
But they rejected him, so the punishment of the day of Covering befell them. Surely it was the punishment of a grievous day!
The day of punishment is called the day of Covering because it covered them with punishment.
26:190
اِنَّ فِیۡ ذٰلِکَ لَاٰیَۃً ؕ وَ مَا کَانَ اَکۡثَرُہُمۡ مُّؤۡمِنِیۡنَ ﴿۱۹۰﴾
Surely there is a sign in this, yet most of them do not believe.
26:191
وَ اِنَّ رَبَّکَ لَہُوَ الۡعَزِیۡزُ الرَّحِیۡمُ ﴿۱۹۱﴾٪
And surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful.

Section 11 (Verses 26:192–26:227): Prophet’s Opponents Warned

26:192
وَ اِنَّہٗ لَتَنۡزِیۡلُ رَبِّ الۡعٰلَمِیۡنَ ﴿۱۹۲﴾ؕ
And surely this is a revelation from the Lord of the worlds.
26:193
نَزَلَ بِہِ الرُّوۡحُ الۡاَمِیۡنُ ﴿۱۹۳﴾ۙ
The Faithful Spirit has brought it,
The Faithful Spirit (al-rūḥ al-amīn) is the angel Gabriel, who brought the Divine revelation to the Holy Prophet. The Prophet himself was known in Makkah as al-Amīn or the Faithful one before revelation came to him.
26:194
عَلٰی قَلۡبِکَ لِتَکُوۡنَ مِنَ الۡمُنۡذِرِیۡنَ ﴿۱۹۴﴾
on your heart that you may be a warner,
The words on your heart indicate that the Prophet’s heart, being the receptacle of the mighty revelation, was truly responsive to the great truths contained in it. The high morals and the broad humanitarian truths which the Quran contains give us a true picture of the great mind. This is referred to in one of the earliest revelations: “And surely you have sublime morals” (68:4). The pithy but most beautiful statement of Aishah, the Prophet’s wife, remains unsurpassed in depicting the character of the Holy Prophet. When asked about it she replied: His character is the Quran, meaning that all those wonderful pictures of moral sublimity drawn in the Quran were pictures of the noble mind to which the Quran was revealed.
26:195
بِلِسَانٍ عَرَبِیٍّ مُّبِیۡنٍ ﴿۱۹۵﴾ؕ
in plain Arabic language.
26:196
وَ اِنَّہٗ لَفِیۡ زُبُرِ الۡاَوَّلِیۡنَ ﴿۱۹۶﴾
And surely the same is in the Scriptures of the ancients.
The prophecies relating to the advent of the Prophet Muhammad, as met with in the Jewish and Christian Scriptures, are referred to very often in the Quran. The statement made here is, however, more comprehensive: They are met with in all ancient scriptures. See 3:81, where a covenant is spoken of as being made through all the prophets of the world with regard to the Prophet’s advent. There is a reference in the next verse to the learned men of the Children of Israel in particular because the Jews and the Christians had long been in contact with the Arabs.
26:197
اَوَ لَمۡ یَکُنۡ لَّہُمۡ اٰیَۃً اَنۡ یَّعۡلَمَہٗ عُلَمٰٓؤُا بَنِیۡۤ اِسۡرَآءِیۡلَ ﴿۱۹۷﴾ؕ
Is it not a sign to them that the learned ones of the Children of Israel know it?
26:198
وَ لَوۡ نَزَّلۡنٰہُ عَلٰی بَعۡضِ الۡاَعۡجَمِیۡنَ ﴿۱۹۸﴾ۙ
And if We had revealed it to any of the foreigners,
26:199
فَقَرَاَہٗ عَلَیۡہِمۡ مَّا کَانُوۡا بِہٖ مُؤۡمِنِیۡنَ ﴿۱۹۹﴾ؕ
and he had read it to them, they would not have believed in it.
Because prophecy plainly showed that the Arabs were to be the recipients of the revelation; see Isaiah 42:11: “Let the wilderness and its cities lift up their voice, the villages that Kedar inhabits.”. In the Old Testament, Kedar, the son of Ishmael, stands for the Arab nation. Hence earlier prophecy required that the final revelation should be granted to an Arab.
26:200
کَذٰلِکَ سَلَکۡنٰہُ فِیۡ قُلُوۡبِ الۡمُجۡرِمِیۡنَ ﴿۲۰۰﴾ؕ
Thus do We make it enter into the hearts of the guilty.
The meaning is that the Quran was made to enter into their hearts by reason of the convincing proof of its truth; but they rejected it, as the next verse shows.
26:201
لَا یُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ بِہٖ حَتّٰی یَرَوُا الۡعَذَابَ الۡاَلِیۡمَ ﴿۲۰۱﴾ۙ
They will not believe in it till they see the painful punishment:
26:202
فَیَاۡتِیَہُمۡ بَغۡتَۃً وَّ ہُمۡ لَا یَشۡعُرُوۡنَ ﴿۲۰۲﴾ۙ
So it will come to them suddenly, while they do not perceive;
26:203
فَیَقُوۡلُوۡا ہَلۡ نَحۡنُ مُنۡظَرُوۡنَ ﴿۲۰۳﴾ؕ
then they will say: Shall we be given respite?
26:204
اَفَبِعَذَابِنَا یَسۡتَعۡجِلُوۡنَ ﴿۲۰۴﴾
Do they still seek to hasten on Our punishment?
26:205
اَفَرَءَیۡتَ اِنۡ مَّتَّعۡنٰہُمۡ سِنِیۡنَ ﴿۲۰۵﴾ۙ
Have you then considered, if We let them enjoy themselves for years,
26:206
ثُمَّ جَآءَہُمۡ مَّا کَانُوۡا یُوۡعَدُوۡنَ ﴿۲۰۶﴾ۙ
then what they are promised comes to them —
26:207
مَاۤ اَغۡنٰی عَنۡہُمۡ مَّا کَانُوۡا یُمَتَّعُوۡنَ ﴿۲۰۷﴾ؕ
what they were made to enjoy will not avail them?
26:208
وَ مَاۤ اَہۡلَکۡنَا مِنۡ قَرۡیَۃٍ اِلَّا لَہَا مُنۡذِرُوۡنَ ﴿۲۰۸﴾٭ۖۛ
And We destroyed no town but it had (its) warners —
26:209
ذِکۡرٰی ۟ۛ وَ مَا کُنَّا ظٰلِمِیۡنَ ﴿۲۰۹﴾
to remind. And We are never unjust.
26:210
وَ مَا تَنَزَّلَتۡ بِہِ الشَّیٰطِیۡنُ ﴿۲۱۰﴾
And the devils have not brought it.
26:211
وَ مَا یَنۡۢبَغِیۡ لَہُمۡ وَ مَا یَسۡتَطِیۡعُوۡنَ ﴿۲۱۱﴾ؕ
And it is not befitting for them, nor have they the power to do (it).
26:212
اِنَّہُمۡ عَنِ السَّمۡعِ لَمَعۡزُوۡلُوۡنَ ﴿۲۱۲﴾ؕ
Surely they are far removed from hearing it.
The argument here is similar to that advanced by Jesus when he said: “And if Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself” (Matthew, 12:26). The evil one cannot be the source of the Quran, for the Quran calls to righteousness. See also verses 221–223.
26:213
فَلَا تَدۡعُ مَعَ اللّٰہِ اِلٰـہًا اٰخَرَ فَتَکُوۡنَ مِنَ الۡمُعَذَّبِیۡنَ ﴿۲۱۳﴾ۚ
So do not call upon another god with Allah or you would be among those punished.
26:214
وَ اَنۡذِرۡ عَشِیۡرَتَکَ الۡاَقۡرَبِیۡنَ ﴿۲۱۴﴾ۙ
And warn your nearest relations,
When this verse was revealed, the Holy Prophet, standing on Mount Safa, invited every tribe by name, and when the representatives of all the tribes had gathered together — among them being also the Quraish and that inveterate enemy of the Holy Prophet, Abu Lahab — the Holy Prophet thus addressed them: “Tell me, if I were to inform you that a great army in the valley lies in wait to make a raid upon you, would you believe me?” “Yes!” was the reply in one voice, “for we have never found anything but truth emanating from your lips.” “Then,” said the Prophet, “know that I am a warner to you of an approaching punishment.” “May you perish,” cried out the ill-tempered Abu Lahab, “was it for this that you called us together?” (Bukhari, 65.26:2).
26:215
وَ اخۡفِضۡ جَنَاحَکَ لِمَنِ اتَّبَعَکَ مِنَ الۡمُؤۡمِنِیۡنَ ﴿۲۱۵﴾ۚ
and be gentle to the believers who follow you.
26:216
فَاِنۡ عَصَوۡکَ فَقُلۡ اِنِّیۡ بَرِیۡٓءٌ مِّمَّا تَعۡمَلُوۡنَ ﴿۲۱۶﴾ۚ
But if they disobey you, say: I am clear of what you do.
26:217
وَ تَوَکَّلۡ عَلَی الۡعَزِیۡزِ الرَّحِیۡمِ ﴿۲۱۷﴾ۙ
And rely on the Mighty, the Merciful,
The Prophet is here told to rely on the Mighty, the Merciful, the very words that are repeated at the end of almost every section of this chapter, thus showing that the fate of the opponents of former prophets was spoken of simply to warn his own opponents. The attribute of mightiness is used to indicate the power to punish the wicked, while mercy indicates the deliverance and triumph of the righteous, or a merciful dealing even with the opponents.
26:218
الَّذِیۡ یَرٰىکَ حِیۡنَ تَقُوۡمُ ﴿۲۱۸﴾ۙ
Who sees you when you stand up,
26:219
وَ تَقَلُّبَکَ فِی السّٰجِدِیۡنَ ﴿۲۱۹﴾
and your movements among those who prostrate themselves.
26:220
اِنَّہٗ ہُوَ السَّمِیۡعُ الۡعَلِیۡمُ ﴿۲۲۰﴾
Surely He is the Hearing, the Knowing.
26:221
ہَلۡ اُنَبِّئُکُمۡ عَلٰی مَنۡ تَنَزَّلُ الشَّیٰطِیۡنُ ﴿۲۲۱﴾ؕ
Shall I inform you upon whom the devils descend?
26:222
تَنَزَّلُ عَلٰی کُلِّ اَفَّاکٍ اَثِیۡمٍ ﴿۲۲۲﴾ۙ
They descend upon every lying, sinful one —
26:223
یُّلۡقُوۡنَ السَّمۡعَ وَ اَکۡثَرُہُمۡ کٰذِبُوۡنَ ﴿۲۲۳﴾ؕ
they give ear, and most of them are liars.
The subject of v. 212 is reverted to here. The opponents of the Quran would not listen to what is said in the Quran — they are far removed from hearing it, as stated in v. 212 — but they listen to what their leaders in evil say.
26:224
وَ الشُّعَرَآءُ یَتَّبِعُہُمُ الۡغَاوٗنَ ﴿۲۲۴﴾ؕ
And (as to) the poets — the deviators follow them.
26:225
اَلَمۡ تَرَ اَنَّہُمۡ فِیۡ کُلِّ وَادٍ یَّہِیۡمُوۡنَ ﴿۲۲۵﴾ۙ
Do you not see that they wander in every valley,
That is, they pursue an aimless course, while the Prophet has a set purpose before him, and it is to make people walk in the ways of righteousness.
26:226
وَ اَنَّہُمۡ یَقُوۡلُوۡنَ مَا لَا یَفۡعَلُوۡنَ ﴿۲۲۶﴾ۙ
and that they say that which they do not do?
The first suggestion of the disbelievers was that the Quran was the work of the devil. That being shown to be inconsistent with its very nature and with the righteousness it preached, they said that it was the work of a poet. As against this they are told that none of the characteristics of a poet’s work are to be met with in the Quran. The poet never leads his followers to a life of righteousness, while the Quran was bringing about a pure transformation in the lives of those who followed it. Again, the poets say things which they do not practise, whereas the Prophet was not only a preacher of righteousness, but also an exemplar who translated into practice what he taught in words. And the weightiest consideration of all is that the poets cannot utter prophecies like those which are met with in the Quran. It is to this that attention is called in the next verse.
26:227
اِلَّا الَّذِیۡنَ اٰمَنُوۡا وَ عَمِلُوا الصّٰلِحٰتِ وَ ذَکَرُوا اللّٰہَ کَثِیۡرًا وَّ انۡتَصَرُوۡا مِنۡۢ بَعۡدِ مَا ظُلِمُوۡا ؕ وَ سَیَعۡلَمُ الَّذِیۡنَ ظَلَمُوۡۤا اَیَّ مُنۡقَلَبٍ یَّنۡقَلِبُوۡنَ ﴿۲۲۷﴾٪
Except those who believe and do good and remember Allah much, and defend themselves after they are oppressed. And they who do wrong, will know to what final place of turning they will turn back.
The passage gives a description of the true believers in general, a new statement being introduced with illā (except); or it may refer particularly to the poets from among the believers.
